Hmm, what is this?

It's best to approach art with a curious mindset, especially when encountering something you've never seen before... like this little guy.

Something new to ponder

This is a graphic for a T-shirt that I'm experimenting with. Still developing a name for this creature. It's a heart-shaped seed sprouting into a butterfly, representing transformation, growth, and all the virtues. Right now, it is sleeping, waiting patiently to evolve into what it will become.

Pretty much there...

Here's a snapshot of the painting now, it's about 95% done. I keep seeing a few things I want to fix, but for the most part, it's pretty much there.

School of Athens parody painting for Concrete Network

I'm working on a magazine cover for Concrete Network. It's a concept inspired by Raphael's School of Athens fresco in the Vatican. I've been painting SO many lines! I must admit it's kind of fun, although if I had my choice I'd paint clouds. Here's a look at my process so far:

SI-LA Illustration West 49

Hey there! It's one full week into the new year, and I just received some exciting news: one of my new paintings for the Guardian of the Heart series was accepted into the Society of Illustrator's of Los Angeles competition! The piece is titled "Into the Darkness". This work is part of a conceptual fantasy narrative series about the virtues and vices of our hearts. Set is a metaphysical realm, a battle is waged between the virtuous Musicorns (the guardians of the heart) and the Devourlings (vice-keepers) to free captured hearts and break spells.  The story was inspired by Proverbs 4:23 "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life."

The best part about the competition is that the accepted entries will be exhibited at Gallery Nucleus -  one of my favorite galleries ever! In fact, showing there was one of my 2011 goals, so I think this counts as a fulfillment of this goal =) Now if I can only start to show there regularly....

Progress pics of new projects coming soon...like the t-shirt design I'm working on for Viva La Art's charity line, and Concrete Network's spring magazine cover.

Thanks for visiting, check back soon!

Prayer Warrior progress pics

I can't express how wonderful it is to spend 8 hours at the easel making a painting instead of at the computer writing a thesis. This is bliss, and I am taking advantage of winter break to make art!!! Here are some pics of my most recent painting, Prayer Warrior, for my graduate show.
Burnt Sienna and Sap Green acrylic underpainting, 16x20 wood box panel, starting to block in the oils.

I started with bright colors, then built up a more neutral payne's gray palette, leaving some of the vibrancy peeking out in areas .

The background is blocked in; next step was to paint the figures. I'm quickly working wet into wet the whole time.
The initial blocking in complete. When it's dry I'll go back with more layers to glaze in color, add textures and details.

A snapshot of my tabaret!
